In 2020, working at home has become the new normal. Even before social distancing requirements hit the USA, the country had 5 million remote workers.
Working from home has many advantages which make it popular amongst employees. However, it can become a struggle for those who aren’t used to it.
Productivity can become a challenge within itself. It requires significant amounts of self-motivation and concentration that don’t come hand in hand with being in a space usually meant for relaxing.
Follow these tips to find out how to work from home successfully!
1. Dedicating a Space to Work, If Possible, Is Invaluable
It’s tempting to work on the couch, or even in bed.
Although this might seem like a novelty for the first couple of days, you’ll quickly notice a decline in motivation if you continue. You’ll become easily distracted and your brain won’t be able to distinguish between ‘work’ and ‘play’ mode.
It’s important to dedicate a space to work, so your brain knows when it’s in work mode.
An office room is ideal but if you don’t have space, a corner of any room will be suitable.
2. Sticking to a Routine Is Key in Learning How to Work From Home Successfully
For the same reasons, it’s a good idea to stick to a routine as much as possible.
Your employer or company might be flexible with when you have to get work done (especially if you’re an independent contractor), but you should stick to the same hours you’re used to.
This will keep you productive during working hours and allow you to recharge during the rest of the day.
3. Communicate With Others in Your Home When You Need To
Something else that can be highly distracting when working from home is other people in the house.
It’s important to create boundaries. If possible, section off the space you use from work and ask them to stay away from it.
It’s important to communicate that although you are at home, you are at work.
4. Make Sure You Go Outside Whenever Possible
It can be easy to get into a routine that means you’re stuck indoors all the time. Whether you have a break during your at home hours, or it’s after you’ve finished them, it’s important to take a walk whenever you can.
Even if it’s just ten minutes around the block, you’ll feel much more refreshed, and it’s important not to deprive yourself of fresh air.
5. Employ Different Communication Methods — E-mail Isn’t a Good Substitute for Everything
It’s a good idea to check in with your co-workers in a format other than e-mail, to stay connected — especially on important matters.
Tone can be misconstrued in text, so check in over a phone call or even a video call.
Virtual meetings are invaluable for the morale of the team and will keep everyone engaged.
Make Sure You Know What Works for You!
Ultimately, the best thing you can do is be aware of what works for you.
It can be intimidating at first to figure out how to work from home successfully but once you know what location and hours put you at peak productivity, you’ll have a much easier time.
